COOK’S GOAL LIFTS VARSITY BOYS OVER #3 BROOKWOOD

In a hard fought back and forth battle that saw both teams with quality chances, it was a second half long distance rocket fired by senior Chris Cook that was the difference in the game as the Peachtree Ridge Lions defeated the Brookwood Broncos 1-0 at Brookwood Stadium on Saturday night.  The win pushes the Varsity Boys to 4-0 on the season.

Chris Cook’s 30-yard laser finds the back of the net at Brookwood on Saturday night.

Once again, the Lion’s passing was superb as they probed for holes in the Bronco defense all night.  “Our possession was good tonight – especially in the first half,” stated boys’ varsity Coach Ryan Sutton, “our guys got the job done and I am proud of them.  Brookwood is a great team with a great coach and a great tradition.  We still have a ton of work to do to reach our goals for this season, but for tonight the boys can enjoy the fruits of their labor.  Then we are right back after it in practice on Monday.”

With the back and forth action, both teams had quality chances throughout the match.  Michael Valenzuela, Juan Herrara, Jeremy Rector, Justin Sedam, and Josh Mahram each had good looks at goal.

The Lion midfielders were patient in the attack which led to the possession arrow favoring Peachtree Ridge in the first half.  After Cook’s goal, which came about 6 minutes into the second half, Brookwood pressed hard for an equalizer.  Tension rose in the final 10 minutes as Brookwood pushed every one forward, forcing the Lions to weather 4 corner kicks and 6 throw-ins deep in Lion territory to seal the victory.

Defensively the Lions were tight.  “I can’t say enough about the guys in the back, they were solid, aggressive, and backed each other up all night,” Coach Sutton commented.  Sedam, JT Taplin, Grayson Guldenschuh, Derek Bryant and Goalie Mitch Kupstas turned in their fourth clean sheet of the 2011 campaign.

The Lions return to action Tuesday, March 1st, when they play the Northview Titans at 8:00pm at Northview High School.
