Burmaster’s Goal Lifts Lions over Raiders

Video Highlights

The Lady Lions came alive in Mt. Airy, Georgia, Tuesday night, and the result was a well deserved 1-0 victory over the Raiders of Habersham Central.

In a game that saw the Lions hit a season high for shots on goal (24), it was a single strike from 30 yards out by Baillie Burmaster that turned out to be the game winner.

“The girls turned up the heat this evening,” a delighted Coach Holleman said.  “Habersham’s keeper really kept this game exciting and close.  We threw everything at her but the kitchen sink, and she was up to the challenge.  With all the work we have been doing in practice and the close matches against the quality teams we have been playing, I am happy for the girls that we got this win.”

The Lion midfielders and forwards were on their game in this match, with midfielders stopping most Habersham offensive efforts before they reached the Lion box.  Burmaster, Alanna Dineen, Esther Cano, Macey Raines, Phoebe Palmer, Wendy Palmer, Olivia Hall, and  Katie Fitton all took turns turning a Habersham attack into a threat of their own.

On the occasion that the Raiders would penetrate through the Lion Midfield, the defense was equally strong at repelling the attack.  Shelby Jennings, Melissa Lay, Katey Lippitt, Lexie Luther, and Graham Green stalled the Raider attack all night, which allowed Lion Keeper McCall Gardner to never be seriously tested in the match.

“This was a great team win, and one the girls should be proud of, they were determined,” commented Coach Holleman.  “We are all looking forward to getting our injured players back healthy and turning some heads in Region play over the next few weeks.”

The Lions head to South Carolina this weekend to take on Aiken and South Aiken in the teams annual overnight road trip.  The Aiken game is at 5:30 PM on Friday, March 11, and the South Aiken game is at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 12.  Be There!
