Lady Lions Stun South Carolina’s 6th Ranked Thoroughbreds

Video Highlights

March 12, 2011:  The Varsity Girls played what could arguably be called their best match of the season in the second game of their two game road trip to South Carolina this past weekend.  Taking on a strong opponent in South Aiken, the 6th ranked team in the South Carolina large school rankings, the Lions came away with a solid defensive performance and the 2-0 victory.

The game was dead-locked 0-0 in a first half that saw both teams with chances.  Stellar defensive play by Katey Lippitt, Baillie Burmaster, and Melissa Lay allowed the Lions to turn most threats away before they materialized into shots.  When they did, McCall Gardner was up to the task, recording her fifth shut-out of the season.

It was midway through the second half when an aggressive Emily Edmond gained control of the ball and set up a beautiful twenty-five yard shot by Shelby Jennings for the Lions first goal.  Jennings perfectly placed shot was over the keepers head and found the space between the keeper’s outstretched arm and the cross bar.

In the 78thminute, junior Libby Callaway was re-inserted into the match when Phoebe Palmer, whose strong play had kept South Aiken on their toes the entire game, was struck in the face by a clearance attempt forcing her to seek treatment on the sideline.  Callaway’s impact was immediate, as another great ball from Edmond found her in the box where the ball deflected off a South Aiken defender.  Callaway wasted no time as she took the deflection out of the air and buried the opportunity in the net with her left foot, putting the final stamp on the 2-0 Lion victory.  The ensuing celebration was appreciated by the Lion fans as the well deserved victory was the "icing on the cake" for a weekend of great, team-oriented soccer by the Lady Lion’s.
