Cook and Sack Come Up BIG, Lion Team Effort Secures Victory

Video Highlights

Doing their work on opposite ends of the field, Forward Chris Cook and Goal Keeper Daryl Sack were the lynch pins in a strong team performance that saw the Varsity Lions come away with the 1-0 victory at South Aiken stadium on Saturday.

A strong effort taking place between the penalty boxes by the entire Lion team ensured that any chances that the South Aiken boys were going to get were going to have to be earned.

Cook started things off right when in the second minute he took a laser-guided throw-in from Justin Sedam out of the air with his left foot and beat the Thoroughbred’s keeper before he could react.  The goal was the third time this season that Cook has scored the game winning goal in a close match.  He did the same against Milton and Brookwood, both 1-0 victories.

Having done the offensive damage early, it was Sack’s turn to put his defensive stamp on the contest.

On a questionable call where Senior J.T. Taplin was whistled for a foul in the box by a referee some 50-yards from the play standing on the opposite 18-yard line at the other end of the field (replay clearly shows that the play was outside the box), the Thoroughbred’s were awarded a penalty kick.

As the tension rose, a calm Sack took his place in the net.   Aiken’s leading scorer stepped to the spot to try to knot the score.  But it was not to be, as Sack dove to his left stopping the shot and smothering any chance for a rebound.

“Daryl played solid and poised all game,” said a relieved but excited Coach Ryan Sutton.  “Gosh, what a great game this was.  I realize keeper’s live for one-on-one situations, but today will be one of those games that Daryl should remember for a long time.  He sealed the win for our team – plays like that make all sports what they are – fun!”

Frustrating the Thoroughbred’s the entire game with team tenacity which saw every player covering another’s back, the Lions were aggressive, physical when they had to be, and working both ways.

Next up the Lions are at home against Norcross at Lion Stadium on Tuesday, March 15th, at 7:45 PM.  Be There!
