JV TEAMS POST WINS AGAINST LANIER

JV Boys Start Season With 2-1 Win

JV Girls Never Look Back, Winning 10-0 Against Lanier

What a great way to start a regular season! The JV Boy’s came away from Lanier on Monday night with a 2-1 victory, and dominated the game offensively in the first half.  During the half the Lion’s blasted 9 shots on goal and secured 8 corner kicks.  If not for some spectacular play by the Lanier keeper, the game would have been over after the first 35 minutes.  While the Lions were all over the Lanier end of the field, it was not until the 33-minute mark when they finally found the back of the net.  A brilliant ball played over the top of the Bulldog defense found a streaking Juanghyun Nam.  Nam was challenged by the charging Bulldog keeper but successfully dribbled around the keeper and past two Lanier defenders, slotting the ball into the back of the net for the first goal of the contest.  During the half the Lion defense gave up only one shot on goal, and Keeper Josh Pence was up to the task.

Lanier came out strong in the second half doing a better job of moving the ball forward. Two minutes into the half, the Bulldogs were awarded a penalty kick which they successfully converted knotting the score at 1-1.   With the score tied, both teams showed renewed intensity to find the game winner.  Five minutes into the half, the Lions were also awarded a penalty kick.  Edgar Rico stepped to the spot and calmly put the ball in the back of the net, securing the lead and eventual victory for the Lions.  The game was intensely contested by both sides the rest of the way, with the Lion defenders holding their own against a frustrated Lanier offense.

“Once again, our defenders held Lanier off and gave our offense a chance to produce,” commented Lion Coach Tyler LaFleur. “Games like this one take a team effort, and we certainly got that tonight.  We did a nice job on both sides of the ball.”  Lanier only had one corner kick and four shots at goal in the game. Pence had 2 saves and Nick Gagne had 1 save.

Monday night may have been a day off of work for some, but not our JV Lady Lions.  These girls are working hard on having a winning season!  They cleaned house again at their 2nd game of season against Lanier.  Becca Owens started us off with the 1st goal eight minutes into the game. Then the momentum took off with Brianna Bagnasco and Alice Yoon scoring a total of 4 goals each!   Smriti Singh also helped finish the win with a goal in 2nd half.  Ashley Turner had 2 assists from her defensive position.  Makeda Pyles and Taylor McMillan helped run up the score with several assists each for Brianna and Alice.  The game was called 10 minutes into the second half under the high school “mercy rule” with a score of Lions 10 – Longhorns 0.  It was so exciting that most of the boys even stayed anticipating the shut out!

Coach York said after the game, “These girls are spoiling our fans by making the win look so effortless!  However, our next game against Norcross will be a tough one.  Hopefully we will continue to pull out another win.”  Let’s Roll!
