EAGLES BEAT LIONS

JV Lion Boys lose 2-0 to Region Leader Collins Hill

March 8, 2012: On this beautiful evening both teams’ fans came out to watch and support a rivalry game.  The Lions started the first half with great ball movement. Five minutes into the game Lions forward Fredris Herrara broke free with the ball and had a shot on the goal that was deflected away by Eagles Goal keeper.  “Our midfielders were working hard to create scoring opportunities,” stated Lions Coach Tyler LaFleur, “but unfortunately we were not able to capitalize on them.  Probably our best chance of the first half was Kevin Kang’s shot, unfortunately it was just wide.”  While the Lion’s were having trouble converting, with about 2 minutes remaining in the first half, Collins Hill was able to find the back of the net off a corner kick.  The ball was perfectly placed into a “scrum” of players in front of the net, and ultimately found the foot of the eagle forward.  He converted the chance to put the Eagles up 1-0.

Both teams came back strong in the second half and stepped up their play.  Under strong pressure from the Collins Hill attacking players, the Lions defense and midfielders played very well and broke up many plays.  At six minutes into the second half Collins Hill scored their second goal off another corner kick on a perfectly placed head ball that Lion keeper Nick Gagne had no opportunity to defend.

The Lions pushed forward and created several scoring opportunities, with Edgar Rico putting his shot just wide.  The Lions had another excellent chance, when with 10 minutes to go in the contest, were down by 2-0 but relentlessly kept pushing trying to score. Lions had a scoring opportunity at 17 minutes in to the second half when a long throw in by Lion defender Colin BeVier found Jordon Bowens.  His shot went just over the goal – and Lion’s were left wanting.  The Eagles totaled 13 shots on goal during the game, and the Lions had 3.   Goalies Josh Pence and Gagne split time in goal, with Pence recording 5 saves and Gagne having 6 saves.

Next up the Junior Varsity Lions take to the road to play Mountain View.  The Girls have the early match at 5:45 p.m., while the Boy’s begin at 7:30 p.m.  You can find directions to all away games from Peachtree Ridge High School here.
