LADY LIONS TIE LONGHORNS

Lady Lions battle Lambert Longhorns to a 0-0 draw.

Prior to Senior Night festivities our Lady Lions varsity played a hard fought and competitive game against the Lambert girls.  Both teams are ranked in the top ten in Georgia in their respective divisions.  The game served as an outstanding tune-up for the opening of state tournament play.

Even though the game ended in a scoreless tie it was full of action and excitement.  One minute into the game the Lions mounted the first challenge.  Senior Alanna Dineen carried the ball up the middle and kept possession while veering to the right side.  She placed a nice centering ball to Amanda Ferry who hit a firm shot just wide.  Near misses and outstanding keeper play would prove to be the story of the night for both sides.

At 35:25 a Lambert forward broke free on the left side and rushed in on Lion’s keeper Cosette Morche.  Senior defender Katey Lippitt challenged her from the inside and forced the shot wide.  Katey showed the speed and determination that has been her hallmark at Peachtree Ridge.  Great hustling play Katey!

At 24:00 Jordyn Missel stole a pass in the Longhorn end and fired a shot just high.  At 20:10 Jordyn had another opportunity and missed high once more.  Jordyn has had some very key and important goals for the Lions this season and almost had another.

In the first 30 minutes of the game the Lions had more chances and an advantage in the control of the game.  Kayla Thomas and Katey Lippitt were both stepping up defensively along with Seniors Shelby Jennings and Graham Green.  Shelby and Graham have been stalwarts of the Lion’s defense all year and throughout their varsity careers.

At 9:32 the Longhorns had an excellent opportunity when a crossing pass was headed directly on frame and saved over the top by Lion’s keeper Cosette Morche.

At 3:24 a hard shot from the right side that was headed into the upper 90 was again deflected over the top by Morche.  Both of these plays looked like goals when they were struck.  In a matter of minutes Morche saved two potential goals and kept the Lions deadlocked at halftime.

At 33:00 in the second half the Lions had a great opportunity when Seniors Dineen and Emily Edmond combined with some nifty possession and ball handling.  Dineen charged up the middle and fed Edmond with a well placed lead on the right.  Emily beat her defender on the baseline and sent a perfect centering pass in front of a wide open net but no one filled from the back side.  Emily has missed a large part of her senior season due to illness but it’s great to see her back on the pitch and we count on her contributions during the playoffs.

At 32:00 Morche stopped another Lambert shot with an excellent and athletic save.

Throughout the game Lion Senior Katie Fitton held down the midfield with aggressive play and challenged every Longhorn possession that came her way. Katie always uses her smarts on the field to be in the right spot at the right time and has also shown a great outside shot for several key goals this season.  The Lion’s soccer program will miss her next year.

The last minutes of the game found Lambert with the best chances and they fired two hard shots over the top of the net.  As time expired the game remained 0-0.

The quality of play in this game was outstanding from both teams.  The Lions will carry the momentum of strong play into the playoffs and a first round match with the Brookwood Bronchos on Wed. May 2nd at 7 PM on our home field.

In his remarks at the Senior Night ceremony Coach Holleman noted that this Lions team has won the first Region 7 championship in school history.  The team also has attained the highest State ranking at #3 in division 5A and has the third best regular season record at 12-4-1.  Let’s cheer them on to more wins in the playoffs.
